Russian Church reunification is main event of 2007 - Alexy II ( 17.12.2007 )

Moscow, December 13, Interfax - The reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church inside and outside Russia was the main church event of 2007, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II said in a Thursday interview with the television channel Vesti 24.

"The Act of Canonical Communication between the Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia (ROCOR) was the main event of the outgoing year," he said.

The Moscow Patriarchate has about 700 dioceses abroad, including about 300 dioceses controlled by the ROCOR, he said.

The patriarch stressed the importance of closer contacts with Russians living abroad, "it is very important to unite the Russian world, which is linked to the home country through Orthodox dioceses. We must not lose this link," he said.

The patriarch commented on his recent visit to a ROCOR church in Munich.

"The head of the Russian Orthodox Church paid his first-ever visit to a ROCOR church. I did not see any signs of the former alienation," he said.
