Fifty Georgian Muslims receive Holy baptism in Batumi (Georgia) ( 29.05.2006 )

Fifty Georgian Muslims were baptized together in Batumi and became Orthodox Christians. The youngest of the newly baptized was four years old, and the oldest was seventy. The baptism was performed by the First Hierarch of the Georgian Orthodox Church, Bishop Dimitry of Batumi and Skhalt.

During the three-year-occupation of Ajaria by the Turks, nearly all Ajarian Georgians were Islamized. The tendency toward returning to Christianity became apparent in the beginning of 1990s. The proportion of Christians to Muslims in the beginning of this century in Ajaria was 1:1. In the recent years, the Christianization of the local Muslims has become more active.
