“Prayer, by reason of its nature, is the converse and union of man with God. By its activity, it is maintenance of the universe, reconciliation to God, the mother of tears and their daughter at the same time, propitiation for sins, a bridge to cross temptations, an armor that protects from every affliction, defeat of demonic attacks, service to angels, food to all bodiless, future exaltation, endless struggle, a fountain of virtues, a cause of graceful gifts, invisible progress, food for the soul, illumination of the mind, an axe for despair, confirmation of hope, liberation from sorrow, monk’s wealth, hesychast’s treasury, decrease of wrath, a mirror of spiritual progress, an indicator of spiritual measure, a revealer of spiritual state, a foreteller of future goods, an omen of eternal glory. For him who truly prays, prayer is the court, the judgment hall and tribunal of the Lord before the judgment to come.” (Saint John of the Ladder)
