The feast of Saint George the Victor in the Antiochian Orthodox Church ( 08.05.2006 )

The holy Great-martyr and Victor George is particularly venerated in the Antiochian Orthodox Church. According to the local tradition, the holy great-martyr was born and buried in this region, where a great number of churches and monasteries have been built to his honour since the earliest times.

On May 6 in Damascus took place festive services, the chief celebrant being the Head of the Antiochian Orthodox Church, His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius IV. In his address to the countless clergy and faithful laity, the blessed Ignatius IV underlined that holiness is God’s gift to every Christian, who by his own free will can use it to reach the heights of likeness to God, or else hide it in the ground like the lazy servant.
