“Obedience is absolute renunciation of our own life, clearly expressed in our bodily actions. Or: obedience is mortification of the members with our reason being alive. Obedience is performing one’s duty without examination. It is a voluntary death, life without curiosity, being carefree when in danger, our unprepared defense before God, no fear of death, safe sailing, walking in a dream. Obedience is the tomb of the will and the resurrection of humility. The one obedient is as if dead: he does not answer nor does he reckon, whether it comes to good things or something that seems evil, because responsible for all of it will be he who has mortified his soul godly. Obedience is an abandonment of discernment in a wealth of discernment.” (Saint John of the Ladder)
